I love themed engagement and wedding photography sessions. Nanae and Jonathan’s “Shanghai 1942″ edgy engagement photography session was hosted at the following locations: Pasadena, Chinatown Los Angeles, and Downtown LA. These engagement pictures were truly amazing!

I am always a sucker for themed type of wedding and engagement photography sessions. With a theme, there is a really unique direction where I can focus on when we photograph these sessions. Nanae and Jonathan is a quirky couple who love art; whether it is in photography or fashion. Jonathan’s profession is designing projects for movie productions for Lucas Arts and Nanae love fashion designs and makeup. When we threw in our ideas together, this is what we decided on for their edgy engagement photography session. In Nanae and Jonathan’s engagement session in Pasadena and Los Angeles, they chose the theme “Shanghai 1942″ which was super classy! Of course, even with a classy photo shoot, we added a bit of our personal spice to this engagement photography session.

With this themed engagement photo session, we chose two cities that have upheld their classic look through the changes – Pasadena and Chinatown Los Angeles. Our first location at Pasadena was to warm up and create edgy photographs in the fields under one of Old Town Pasadena’s overpass. One of the best parts of engagement photography session is that there are no time restrictions and anything can happen! An unexpected event during this photo shoot at Pasadena was that we ran into a couple goat owners and they allowed us to take some fun photos with their pets (you will see below)!

Once everyone warmed up and the timing of the sun was perfect, we headed to Chinatown Los Angeles to start our super edgy, yet classy, engagement photo shoot with their “Shanghai 1942″ theme. In order to capture these type of photos, Danny and I set up multiple strobes to keep the focus on our subjects. On the side note, the accessories and outfits from Nanae were all her designs, which pulled off in this edgy engagement photography session perfectly! After we concluded our engagement photo session here in Chinatown Los Angeles, we wrapped everything all nicely up over at Hotel Figueroa! Since Hotel Figueroa’s lobby is a work or art in itself with all the colors and designs, it was not hard to find a place to take some awesome photos! Sit back, relax, and enjoy Nanae and Jonathan’s “Shanghai 1942″ edgy engagement photography session!

Thank you Nanae and Jonathan for such a fun day during your engagement photography session and managing to deal with the cold weather and bugs in the field! Your final photographs from this engagement session was well worth it! Nanae and Jonathan will be hosting their wedding at beautiful Greystone Mansion.

Nina and Tom shared fond memories in Hollywood, so they decided their engagement photography session should take in this fair city. Their wedding shortly afterward took place at Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica. Their engagement and wedding photographs were all so touching.

Hollywood has so much history in terms of the City of Stars, along with all the movie sets and tourist attractions. Tom actually works in the movie industry, so Hollywood was an ideal place for these two love birds to have their engagment pictures taken. We started out at the Kodak Theater and moved along Hollywood strip. It was fortunate that Tom knew his way around secluded areas in Hollywood to avoid the hustle and bustle of the traffic generated from the cars and tourists that populated the streets.

It took a few rounds for this photo. There were too many kids playing in the fountain at the time and stood in front of my camera. I should have taken a few photographs of those kids that danced in front of me. =)

There were many beautiful murals such like this following engagement photo all over the walls of Hollywood. Nina and Tom somehow always took interest in this specific one.

We later drove down a few miles on the outskirts of Hollywood for some peace and quiet in a local park to conclude our engagement photo session.

Aileen and Greg chose their engagement photography session to take place at Disney Concert Hall and LA Union Station located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles! They wanted a vintage 20′s theme and their outfits and poses paired up perfectly! They even brought a nice red chair as a prop in their engagement photos.

When I first met Aileen and Greg, we clicked instantly! Their personalities and positive energy filled my studio during our meeting. Aileen has a tendency of singing whenever she gets excited. Apparently, she was excited throughout our meeting, as well as, our engagement photo shoot in Downtown Los Angeles. Who needed a radio when my bride sang then entire time! Aileen and Greg really wanted photographs that synced with the “Roaring 20′s” theme. We started out day at Disney Concert Hall, then wrapped everything up at Los Angeles Union Station. Check out their following engagement photos and let me know if they pulled it off!

The beautifully crafted red chair in the following photographs was Greg’s anniversary gift to Aileen. How cute is that?!

Normally, photos are taken on the polished side of Disney Concert Hall. We wanted to spice things up, so we also used the backside of the walls where all the foundation poles and metal nets were shown. I thought this added more character in this photo, especially for their theme!

Los Angeles Union Station
800 N. Alameda Street
Los Angeles, CA

Aileen thought it was appropriate to change into a more elegant and simpler outfit to match LA Union Station. =)

…I am always a sucker for bird cage veils.

This was my favorite engagement photo of the day! The sun barely crept through the large glass windows and provided a more dramatic picture for us!

…aww, and one final kiss to conclude our engagement session.

I hope everyone enjoyed these photos as much as I did. Thank you again Greg for the chair and Aileen for the beautiful songs! I will have their wedding photos from Huntington Hyatt posted up shortly.

Cheers,
