Pacific Electric Lofts Wedding | Marilou & Jed

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Hello,

Who would have known that one could party so hard at a penthouse suite rather than a conventional wedding reception hall. Just the other day, Tang, Doug and I photographed a trendy wedding reception [because the wedding couple got married the day before] at the Pacific Electric Lofts in Downtown Los Angeles. Marilou and Jed hosted an absolutely hot [literally with the fire dancers] and sexy party.

Pacific Electric Lofts
610 S Main Street
Los Angeles, CA 90014

Since we had a significant amount of time in the morning, we did a short private session around the streets of Los Angeles. We started at the Disney Concert Hall.

Afterwards, we moved to that cool location that we used for our wedding photography workshop!

While we were taking pictures, a number of motorcycles [I think Choppers] rolled up along with some classic domestic vehicles. George (the owner of the green vehicle) was so kind to let us use it for some pictures!

We tried to do something like a pin-up picture here.

The following image has George and his sons.

Check out the nice details at their wedding reception. This was all at the Penthouse Suites II at the Pacific Electric Lofts in Downtown Los Angeles. Cool looking cake huh?

This wedding reception was an all-white party. Everyone donned their best white attire.

The following is Alyson Montez – traditionally disoriented violinist. She, along with two other electric violinists, played a number of songs that were simply entrancing. My favorite tune from them was the theme song for James Bond 007!

Here are some overview pictures of the grand party.

Midway into the party, Kamala and her cronies came and gave everyone a firey demonstration. Their pyrotechnic skills and dance moves were hot [no pun intended haha]. Their group is called Fire Groove.

We all kept some distance while photographing and still felt the heat. I cannot imagine how hot it must have been for them.

Here is an overview picture of the Pacific Electric Lofts at night. You can still see the top floors of the building lit blue because of their wedding party.

Overall, it was a blast working with Marilou and Jed. The party they hosted was definitely something out of the ordinary, which makes every wedding uniquely memorable.

Tied the Knot! | Alisa & Andrew

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Dear you,

Doug and I photographed Alisa and Andrew’s engagement session in Old Town Pasadena a while ago. Before you know it, we were photographing their wedding at the Doubletree Hotel in Claremeont!

Oh look at the boys!

And now look at the ladies!

The trees in the background offered a great background for Alisa and her father. He had such a happy smile on his face!

Alisa and Andrew had a sizable wedding party. This was in the courtyard right outside of the reception hall at Doubletree Hotel

These three kids were the flower girl and ring bearers. They were so cute! They look good in the picture, but can you imagine the trouble I had to go through to keep them all laying down nice and still? The picture was well worth it though!

This kid was my favorite! He just stared into the camera without being intimidated at all.

We took some relaxed portraits with some nice green trees in the background. I positioned that yellow smudge (street lamp) to give it a warm touch.

Since Alisa and Andrew are fairly young, they had lots of young attendees. All of them were awesome dancers!

Wilshire Grand Hotel Wedding | Luz & Jeff

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Hello,

My mom’s friend – Luz Segura – is now Luz Hartman as of two weeks ago. Luz and Jeff met while teaching together at a school in Los Angeles. After much planning, the two of them finally tied the knot at a local church and hosted their reception at Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles.

Who called for a full service breakfast and mimosas?

Look at Jeff’s cat! Each time I photographed him, he would scramble away, but he was sure to come back for a back rub.

Ah I recognize that perplexed look all of the time. That is why as a wedding photographer, I have be be knowledgeable in various formal etiquettes in case they need a helping hand.

Luz and Jeff had a Mariachi band play during their ceremony. They were loud, yet cool.

Wedding at Luxe Hotel | Elena & Mike

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Howdy,

I had the opportunity to a few weeks ago at Luxe Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Luxe Hotel
11461 Sunset Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90049

The couple – Elena and Mike – were the last amongst their friends to get married. It was just about time to tie the knot! I got the chance to hang around with the bride for a little bit before moving to the groom’s side where the guys were just lounging around with plenty of spirits to drink.

Here is a picture of Elena’s beautiful shoes!

luxe hotel wedding photography

Here were some gifts that the bride received from her friends HA! I totally dig the one about Valium.

While the girls were cheering with glasses of champagne, I shouted, “STOP!” I then crawled below and kindly asked them to resume :D Check out the cool perspective! Too bad I did not have a wider lens on at the time.

I absolutely love pictures like these! These clip-on ties are just so darn hard to put on!

luxe hotel wedding photography

This one is my favorite! Since I had a considerable amount of time to photograph the groom and groomsmen, I had time to set everyone up just the way I liked it. I also added some texture to give the image a rustic look. Awesome huh? The following image was taken at their hotel in Brentwood.

Hotel Angeleno
170 N. Church Lane
Los Angeles, CA 90049

One thing funny about this hotel is that it is in the shape of a cylinder. Therefore, all of the rooms are like pizza wedges. It is definitely an interesting design.

These heart things were hung all over the ceremony area. They look like some form of berries.

This lady was my favorite! She had sporadic expressions throughout the wedding. It was my goal to capture all of them! :)

Adorable kid!

When I saw the DJ setting up the gel lights along the walls of the restaurant, I decided to wait until everything was lit before I photographed the cake.

Since this kid was so bored, I decided to play with him. See no evil. Speak no evil. Hear no evil. :)

Wedding Photography Workshop – Completed!

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Hello,

For those who attended our second wedding photography workshop – good times! Our goals were to promote learning and community building. We had a total of 25 attendees (I think)! There were so many that it made my humble home look like a zoo of photographers.

Special thanks to the following for making this wedding photography workshop a total success!

Enjoy the pictures from our workshop! Since I do not have everyone’s cards, I will just share a few images from Doug’s camera. Before we begin with images of the hot models, here are some kudos to Peter for introducing the models, Gavin for helping out, and Julie and Angelina from All Made Up!

Doug was trying to show the class that a photographer can shoot in just about any location. This was taken at the stairs in our living room.

Do not deny it, he’s hot!

This goes equal for Megan! Thanks to Gavin for introducing this awesome location to us!

Remember, not all images must include faces as long as viewers clearly know who the subjects are or what they are intending to do.

This one was a tricky picture because Doug intentionally let light leak through to give Megan some nice hair light so proper calibration was crucial.

Shooting in the shade with minimal back lighting is always easy. Therefore, we discussed photographing in situations where lighting might not be as favorable. We had the models stand right in the middle of the street where there was no shade. The pose was simple after I asked a couple of questions. “Is there shadows under my face when looking at the sun?” “Am I squinting? If so, which way do you think might be better?” To compensate for back lighting, we showed them that they can either splash some light onto their faces or overexpose just a little. The following is me making that point.

back lighting tutorial

Picture looks good, right? Keep it simple. As a photographer, we are always not given the best lighting conditions, so be prepared!

Here is some of the 2008 Furious Photographers Workshop class shooting away!

wedding photography workshop

After years of not having a group photo, we took this opportunity to take a picture of the Furious Photographers team. Isn’t this an awesome picture? It was so hot wearing ties and sports coats in the afternoon heat. From left to right, we have Tang, me (Lawrence), Doug, Julie and Greg.

wedding photography workshop

As much as I wanted to have a lesson on remote strobes, there simply was not enough time to cram it into our already packed schedule. After shooting, we returned to our home studio to learn about post-production techniques and marketing strategies.

Remember to share the love,
